i think is is controled by a 3 axis gyro sensor, ( the little black boxes at the top ) also the blue counterwheghts help stablise it

I don't know what's in the programming for the Segway but I think you are on the right track.

Oooh, fun. How was it moving around? Aside from staying perfectly balanced, it looked like it was twisting and turning, as if confused about where to go or what to do.
