Alright, it took me long enough!!!

Just a quick note: It may look like a really bad attempt at a ocarina making tutorial but it's not, my intentions of this video was just to show off my 6th Ocarina, and some of the making of it!

This is my 6th home made ocarina, just as the title says. It has 9 holes and is in the key of G2 with the range of one octave plus 2. It's painted obviously blue using:
Folk Art 656 Metallic Blue Sapphire
Folk Art 577 Metallic Sahara Gold
Clear Acrylic Sealer

I believe everything else to say has mostly been said in the video But I will say this again,
The ocarina still isn't perfect. Both in clarity, tune and charismatically. The tuning I think is pretty close but I had a difficult time tuning it due the the fundamental note being a little sharp, which gave me some grief. The airiness is still an issue. seems to get a little less with each ocarina, but I'm still not 100% on the main cause or the fix so all I can do is keep trying, or change my method entirely. Charismatically, I think it looks pretty awesome, but there's still a lot that could make it look better, especially a proper glaze, rather than just painted and sealed.
That all being said, for my 6th ocarina, all without molds, I'm satisfied with the way it turned out and just hope the next one, and the next after that and so on, just keep getting better!

The 2 tunes I used for the background music (In the order they played) are:
Metal Gear Solid - Opera Intro
Metal Gear Solid 2 - Snake's Theme

The tune I played is a quick, slightly wrong (haha):
Breath of Fire - Alan and Cerl

  • what size of drill bits did you did and were do i put the holes?

  • Hey man! Your question isn't an easy answer!

The size drill bits/ finger holes depend on the size of the ocarina and the voicing hole.

Basically, when you're tuning the ocarina you just have to go by the fundamental note. That means the first note the ocarina makes without any holes.

So from there, if it plays a C, then your first hole you make, start small and gradually increase the size of the hole, testing the note until it hits D. Just remember, make the hole small and slowly increase!

  • If you have any more questions let me know =p

  • Petey : And u are awesome too , I liked how you made it and you gave me more ideas.

  • Hey thanks man! I'm always happy to give ideas ;)

  • I honestly don't remember at the moment what cone this clay was fired at, I was getting it fired at a place that's no longer open but I'm pretty sure it was cone 06...or 04 but I think 06

  • I'd say, "Where's my straps?" But then you'd say, where's my ocarina? haha

  • So I know you've taken your hand at it, how has it been going for you lately?

  • YAY you're so talented! You make your wife an Ocarina. And she'll start working on straps for you!.. P.S. My bad on the socks!
