Homesteading (13): Goose for the Christmas table

Couldn't resist one more video. Second goose off for dispatch - it had a good life so no regrets.

Best method is to catch it, binds its legs, put into a hessian sack for transporting, and then chop its head off. The first goose dispatched weighed in at 6kg and went straight into the deep freezer.

Thanks for your comments. No, the old lady killed the geese for us - we don't have the guts to do it but she has been killing chickens all her life. In fact, I did lend a hand with some ducks once. The geese are about 7-8 months old. It would have been too expensive to feed them over the winter so a perfect time to dispatch them and they made good eating!

I used to butcher my chickens and guinea hens. I agree with you that you give the animal a good life and treat it decent. It is in the end a food item and you appreicate it giving it's life for that reason. It has to die sometime and the method is fast and painless. I've seen many of my birds die from fox attacks and it's not painless.

By the way, you have some healthy geese there. Goose is delicious. Very nice!

Yes, I agree and these geese had a much better life than battery-raised birds, which are often raised in appalling conditions.
