After one week being home with me, only 6 days of being "halter broke", I was able to trim his front feet. I am not a proffesional trimmer. I have been trimming my own horses feet for about 8 yrs, using Pete Rameys natural barefoot trim with the mustang roll. www.hoofrehab.com He is 10yo and this is his first hoof trim since leave the blm 5-6yrs ago. So before any prof trimmers pick me apart. I think we both did great for his first time. Next time we can do more. Now I just need to find someone willing to tackle the back feet for me.

  • Thanks for the tips. I actually can pick his feet up just fine and pick them out. My problem is with my back and holding a hind foot long enough to 'trim' it. My other horses easily agree to a hoof stand with cradle and a power grinder, so i can do thier back feet quickly enough to handle it. Got a trimmer to come out and get his back feet going for me, and now i can rasp them every few weeks to keep them up

this guy lets me trim his feet now with no halter at all :)

  • Crosstying could get dangerous. My preference is to toss a long rope over his back. This removes the claustrophobia factor and you can easily grab it if he starts walking off. If the horse thinks it has the option to leave, it often stays. You're doing a good job.

  • Great job! If you crosstie him and slowly slide a lead line around his upper leg and slide it down to the back of his foot you can start to safely pick up his back feet, forward, then back! Till you can hold his foot in your hand!
