Crosstying could get dangerous. My preference is to toss a long rope over his back. This removes the claustrophobia factor and you can easily grab it if he starts walking off. If the horse thinks it has the option to leave, it often stays. You're doing a good job.

Great job! If you crosstie him and slowly slide a lead line around his upper leg and slide it down to the back of his foot you can start to safely pick up his back feet, forward, then back! Till you can hold his foot in your hand!

Thanks for the tips. I actually can pick his feet up just fine and pick them out. My problem is with my back and holding a hind foot long enough to 'trim' it. My other horses easily agree to a hoof stand with cradle and a power grinder, so i can do thier back feet quickly enough to handle it. Got a trimmer to come out and get his back feet going for me, and now i can rasp them every few weeks to keep them up
this guy lets me trim his feet now with no halter at all :)
