Dollar A Second was a 1950's comedy game show in which contestants were paid a dollar for every second the game was in play. First broadcast by the DuMont Television Network, the program was quite entertaining with some tricky twists and turns.

The first contestant in this episode, Bernice Sawyer, is very intelligent but at times seems startled, even afraid of robust host, Jan Murray, and his rapid fire delivery.

This is believed to be the only surviving episode and is complete with the original commercials. An interesting aspect of the show is watching how commercial sponsors were plugged in the early days of television; in this case, Mogen David Wine.

  • Love the ad for Mogen David wine, makers of M(ad) D(og) 20/20, choice of skid row bums everywhere. It's "fortified," meaning the alcohol content is artificially boosted up to 20%.

  • @funboy7979 LOL. I like that ad too! -Michael

  • @ 2.21 ok then if you are watching Dollar A Second the 1st time I bet it won't be the last time at the time.

  • LOL I really like Jan Murray as host. Funny guy!

  • Is it just me or does the theme music sound quite similar to the theme for "The Jack Benny Show"?

  • Thanks for noticing this. It certainly does sound similar.

  • @dandydonaldo Ken Roberts also has an old-time radio pedigree: he played dull-witted "adopted son" Cokie in the old "Easy Aces" serial radio comedy (1930s-early 1940s), then became the announcer and neighbour to the Aces when they tried an updated sitcom version, "mr. ace and JANE," in 1948.

  • Ken Roberts was the father of Tony Roberts from Broadway and Woody Allen movies.

  • @ 7.05 the outside event.

  • Thanks, I just took a look at it. Really interesting. The information I included about the belief that this was the only surviving episode came from the site from which it was downloaded, archivedotorg. I'm glad to see another episode up!
