@casperdog777 For the most part it is overhyped, although in BC and Alberta the danger is greater if you aren't careful. I'm 44 years old and live in the province of Ontario and I have never seen a bear in the wild, not once.

Too close. I am a Brit and we're not used to bears, so I was only about 10 metres away. Lovely black bear; I think he was quite young?

How close was he to you?

I walked a lot of trails in Canada but never felt really threatened by bears. Is it over hyped (the danger of bears)?

@casperdog777 Yes and no, I see bears every year especially around the fall season when the bears all hunt for salmon coming up the rivers (im native so I dont have any fishing restrictions). They usually just ignore you but if they run once they see you, then you GET OUT OF THERE ASAP! We've seen bears attack people on boats! All it takes is 1 small thing to set them off, and knowing that they're a lot faster, stronger than people, one swipe of the paw could break your neck!

@raptorculiacan Good advice from some one who is local. Just recently (August 2011) a UK school exploration group were attacked by a polar bear in islands North of Norway. One boy killed and three injured. The party leader shot and killed the bear, he was injured himself. Sadly, some of us don't take these creatures seriously and city types seem them as ''cuddly''. They are wild animals after all. When we walked trails we were aware of bears, but never saw many, apart from Vancouver Island.
