In 1998, a Taliban commander fired grenades at the smaller statue, knocking off its upper half. The Taliban bombed the mountain above the statues frequently, cracking the niches that held the statues and damaging the colossi further. By winter 2001, pleas were raining down on the Taliban from around the world to spare the statues. Pleaders included the Buddhist Thai monarchy and Sri Lanka, itself home to a set of giant Buddha statues. Unesco, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and a leading Islamic scholar in Cairo were also among those begging the Taliban not to carry out their threat to the Bamiyan statues and other Buddha images in museums across the country, wrote Barbara Crossette in The New York Times.

To no avail.

On Feb. 26, 2001, the Talibans supreme leader, Mullah Mohammad Omar, declared that these idols have been gods of the infidels and ordered them destroyed. By early March, the statues were rubble.

  • My question is this. Buddhism is not even a religion, it is a 100% peaceful way of thinking and acting. So why does the Taliban feel the need to destroy a piece of historical wonder? would they also blow up the great pyramids? what joy or gain do they get from doing this? do they think it makes them look good in anyone's eyes but themselves?

  • @hotmercedes Why yoy want waste my time. go read yourself. thanks coming to my video,

2nd talk regarding this video ,

  • how many more afghans have to die before they realize that islam doesnt work? islam is not a religion of peace. it didnt get in afghanistan by peaceful way over 1000 years ago. and even in the 21st century its blind fanaticism has killed thousands. when are afghans going to realize the answer to their suffering has been under their feet for centuries. it is buddhism! the wisdom of the afghan ancestors. go back to buddhism. its your true religion. its the true religion of peace! wake up already!!

  • @rezabeza

are you stupid? monk don't need to know how to break someone's bones. monk's are peaceful people. sure, some practise it here and there but it is practiced for a variety of reasons, including self-defense, competition, physical health and fitness, as well as mental, physical and spiritual development.

  • @rezabeza. Any monks must never use martial arts for his own self purpose. Attack others is forbidden. If attack others, its not Buddhist. True martial arts is to make yourself strong to help others. Never help yourself. Not even self-defense. You freely sacrifice yourself for others. Then the self has been extinguished. This is achievement of the Bodhisattva body. The belief of "God" concept is 100% Other-power. Buddhism also has Amida mantra practice for people who are depend on Other-power.

  • @GrandmasterTigerfist I don't hate Buddhism, I was just asking a question. I have no hatred for other religions. I'm Muslim so I believe anyone who believes God and the Last Day, and does good in this world, will have their reward in the afterlife. This is in the Quran chapter 2, verse 62. Buddhism seems to be very peaceful indeed. The only problem I have with Buddhism is that there is no God. I used to research up on Buddhism and I liked it, but it can't ever replace my belief in God.

  • @rezabeza

Martial art was for self defence not agression against anyone, thats why history speaks that there have been no crusades like war waged by Buddhists. Islamists and crusaders justified their agressions by branding self defence.

Its easy to brand someone as hater in order to justify your own hatred for them. ( Buddhism)

  • @pixusbubblejet Then why is Buddhism associated with Martial Arts? Why does a monk need to know how to break someone's bones?

  • @TheIndianKafir I was replying to Malaka1140 who said Afghanistan was destroyed by karma because the Taliban destroyed the Buddha statues. Actually, the Taliban destroyed those statues DURING the Afghanistan war (2001-present).

  • @rezabeza can you be descriptive about who's country was being devided and what century and time.

Thanks for being part of continue discussion and for keeping it constructive .

  • @Malaka1140 This happened during the time their country was being destroyed you idiot.
