Chemistry at Stockholm University is on the international cutting edge in several areas. This short film looks at work being done in by chemists based at the the Arrhenius Laboratory. The film initially highlights some of the work being done at EXSELENT, the new porous materials research centre at the laboratory. Researchers are working to create new porous matter at the molecular level and new applications for this such as reducing the costs incurred when separating C02 from other gases in the Energy industry. After talking to professor Xiaodong Zou, the film then introduces professor Jan-Erling Bäckvall, who talks about about the key research into Organic Chemistry being done at Stockholm. Researchers at the laboratory are working on building molecules that are mirror images of each other. This means a good deal for the bodys ability to absorb medicine without side effects. Professor Jan-Erling Bäckvall discusses a technique organic chemists at the university developed involving mirroring and enzymes that is of extreme interest to the pharmaceutical industry.
