Most of us have forgotten the Plymouth Colt. But as this commercial from 1984 shows, automakers had the ability nearly 25 years ago to produce a non-hybrid car that got 50+ mpg and cost less then $5k. I had a Plymouth colt, (an 89 i think). Routinely got 40-45mpg. Great little car.

I am wondering if the standards have changed in fuel efficiency testing from then to now. Also this car is a bit liter than what we are used to seeing in the subcompact segment also with car seemed to geared and tuned for fuel efficiency and not performance. Also what are the hard numbers for carb to fuel injection with fuel economy gains.

My mother bought me a new 1984 Plymouth Colt when I started college. It really did get 53 miles per gallon on the highway. It was really simple, but I loved it, and I remember it had a great A/C.
