Dr. Who visits web 1.o

Second Life has a lot of similarities to the world wide web in the mid 90ties, on the one side hype, on the other a sceptical public. where are we now in the evolution of virtual worlds, when companies are pulling out of SL and the mainstream media has seemingly found their favorite new technology to rip apart?
