A cross honouring the victims of the plane crash that killed the late Polish president Lech Kaczynski has provoked thousands of protesters to take to the streets to demand its removal.

Polish scouts erected the 30-foot wooden cross in front of Warsaw's presidential palace nearly four months ago to commemorate the 96 passengers, including the president, who died when their plane crashed in thick fog in western Russia on 10 April.

Official attempts to move the cross to a church have led to violent clashes between police and Catholic pro-cross demonstrators and mass counter-protests by youthful secularists who insist the emblem must go. "The cross has no place in front of a presidential palace in a secular state," one protester told Polish television yesterday.

Anti-semitic? defending cross? If anything the title is anti-polish and there is a long Jewish tradition to hate on Poles. They did it before ww2 and they are doing it now, even though Poland was so tolerant and welcoming of Jews. Now after ww2, Jews get to blame Poles for Nazi crimes yet noone mentions that most of holocaust victims are Poles, Mostly Jewish Poles but also many other religions. If anything the SHOAH business should be Polish.

What does this have to do with the Jews? Are you saying a bunch of Jews flew in from Israel to protest the cross and have the cross moved? This seems like an internal affair of Poland - how did "The Jews" get involved in this? When it rains, is this the fault of "The Jews" too?

This has nothing to do with being anti- or pro-semitic. The title is misleading purposfuly to attract anti-polish resentments. In fact, people are defending the Cross because it reminded about the plain crach and tragedy in which the Polsih President and commanders of Armed Forces died in what is very suspicious and not explaind "accident" in Russia, 2010. They flew there to honor 20,000 polish officers (POWs) murdered by the Soviets/Russians in the Katyn Masscre (1940).
