This video highlights the technical and scientific aspects of the Deep-sea Environmental Processor deployment at Axial Seamount during July 2011. Technical innovations included an ROV-deployable sampling wand and exchangeable external battery packs. The wand was inserted into a tubeworm encrusted hydrothermal vent to sample the high temperature-tolerant bacteria that live beneath the seafloor.

NASA's Astrobiology Science & Technology for Exploring Planets (ASTEP) program is interested in some of the technologies used in the Deep ESP for eventual use in NASA space probes to look for life at possible hydrothermal vents beneath the surface of a liquid ocean on Europa, one of Jupiter's moons. You can watch our video "The Environmental Sample Processor" for more information on this technology.
