A vicious fight has broken out at a picket line at the Melbourne plant of Australia's largest poultry company, Baiada.

More than 100 workers at the Laverton North plant went on indefinite strike on Wednesday evening over conditions at the plant.

A security guard who tried to cross the picket line had his car keys taken away by union members.

When they were returned he tried to drive through the crowd.

"You should not have treated me like that guys. If you done the right thing I would have reversed," the guard told the crowd.

He was met with a chant of "shame on you" before members of the crowd surrounded his car and tried to punch him.

The Ambulance Service has treated one person struck by the car for an arm injury.

Staff at the chicken processing plant say they need better job security, with claims many workers are contractors working below the minimum wage.

Melbourne police are monitoring the picket line overnight.

Baiada has not been available for comment.

  • I'm as pro-Union, pro-picket as can be, but he should have knifed those crazy bastards.

  • @leechjames Sure they could do that, but it wouldn't change the shitty conditions of the job, and would just mean someone else would come along and get treated like dirt. When people do what you suggest, all it does is diminish conditions for the next person, and the next person, and lets bosses get away with whatever they want.

They have the right to organise for just and fair conditions at work, and this is what they've done, and is the intelligent option.

  • any picketer dickhead does that shit to me and I'll run the fuckheads over!!!!

  • Just a man trying to work. The security guard should not have left but called the police after the attack. The video just provides extra proof to what the people have done. They could have easily broken the guys arm. Anyone fancy a game of Chicken?

  • Typical Union behaviour, I don't see anything unusual.

As long as Australians keep supporting the Labor party - these incidents are here to stay.

  • I've been on plenty of pciket lines.

I never behaved like that. Nor did anyone else.

    What scum those people are.

  • This is simply disgraceful. Australia should not be like this.

  • That security guard would not have stopped if there where any less people there. He got what he deserved you don't cross picket lines. Ever.

  • why didn't the police arrest those aggressve people. What a bloody hide.

  • the picture clearly shows people standing in front of the car. Interesting that the TV crews should be there to film the "thuggery".
