The traditional American lawn is a time-consuming, resource-wasting mistake. It's time to kill the lawn and find new ways to create livable outdoor spaces. "The American Meadow Garden" offers homeowners a new model — the designed meadow. What is a meadow? Any landscape in which grasses dominate— sprinkled with a mixture of colorful bulbs, perennials, shrubs, and annuals. Greenlee's meadows are vibrant, shimmering mini-ecosystems that are friendly to kids, pets, and butterflies. Even better — they require minimal resources and absolutely no mowing.
That book is in my amazon wish list.

I created what he's talking about using grasses that are native to my area mixed with native wildflowers...it's so rewarding and so beautiful...I mow once in the fall and supplement with rainwater collected in barrels. He's right..butterflies and bees and birds love it...I never knew a lawn could be so rewarding...it's a different kind of gardening....If you have a turf lawn, I'd say rip it up and start learning about the native grasses in your area...It will bring you lots of joy...
