This amazing phenomena is the result of a strong Red Tide that's been building in La Jolla waters for over a month. The blue glow is caused by an algae bloom commonly referred to as a red tide. The organisms, phytoplankton called Lingulodinium polyedrum, have bloomed since late August, turning the water brownish-red in the daytime, at night when the waves agitate the phytoplankton they create blue light! Enjoy Mother Natures wonders... These clips were taken at Scripps Pier.
@MrOOSTUOO Totally cool, it was WAY more dramatic the day before, the phytoplankton are in 'bands' so the if the waves are not breaking where the plume is its just black.. thats why its so intermittent. If the waves were bigger it would have been truly amazing!
