THIS IS THE BEST EXPRESSION OF TRUE BUDO JIUJITSU. NOT JUST JUDO, NOT JUST AIKIDO, AND NOT JUST BJJ. NOW THE TRUE ART IS COMING TOGETHER. THIS IS HOW IT SHOULD BE TAUGHT.

there is always someone bigger, stronger, faster, smarter! I agree- there is something that can be taken from every art. Its the artist, not the art- this is the same in life, not just martial. Happy training!

Cool. So you study aikido? I practice at a Systema school. It's eclectic though. We don't do 100% russian systema, but the "Combat Systema" in the style of Canadian teacher Kevin Secours. He takes bits of many arts. My teacher in Melbourne used to practice aikido, is a 3rd dan. He shows us a bit. He also shows us how most of the wrist lock stuff can be defeated through relaxation and movement. Personally, I think any art has to teach you how to strike. cheers

agreed. Our school for one, does focus more on the realistic side of things ( at least with the advanced students). It's just one of those things thats a remnant of O'Sensei's aikido- with Aikido deriving from the sword. But i totally agree with what you are saying.

Yeah I guess. But its a pretty atypical street attack, vertically down like that, snap or not. Comes naturally with a sword or barton, but not fists/ knives, short range weapons. It seems to me that aikido spends a lot of time with this one, attack. I think its because the defences look and feel nice aesthetically. I'd rather spend more time on attacks you're more likely to face.

how about in a bar, if somebody grabs a bottle to smash on someones head. A good shomenuchi attack is not when your hand is way over your head and back, but rather a quick snap to the front of the head ( shomen)-

Maybe not a sword, but an overhead attack from a knife or stick is more relevant

as I say, nice as art. but I don't see any other use for defending against a "symbolic" sword attack

Shomenuchi...symbolic of a downward sword attack, knife attack etc.

Nice music vid. But the vertical karate chop? Lost me a bit there.
