"i took out my dog, and him i did shoot" elevates Jock Stewart, and its a very fitting line. I couldn't imagine how much balls it would take to shoot my best friend. The fact that he did means he had a damn good reason to sacrifice his best friend, not for Jock's benefit, but for the dog's. Brilliant line, fills me with sorrow and respect everytime I hear it.

The verse about shooting the dog is pretty much just the Irish version.
It's the Scottish version where he just takes it out hunting.
