@123gubby you cannot train the owl to hunt and come back to you but you can train it to hunt but you have to go to him take the prey that he caught and give him the reward

So he's flying the owl not for falconry, but for exercise and so the bird gets to catch his own meal? I doubt that that's the only way he feeds the bird, but this is done often? It makes sense whenever it's possible.
