Well they say that everything she did up to '55 was unparalleled, even by Callas post '55. I think she lost all the weight around '55, and after that her sound started to change. As far as I am concerned she was FABULOUS after '55 as well, although the wobble was very bad and she sounded strained (in the end). I was alive before she died, however did not come to opera until long after that...in my early 20's.
I prefer this to the '55 one... If had been alive during La Divina's time, I would have smuggled myself with a recorder in her performances and collected bootlegs, like people now do to Phish... Every performance differently nuanced than the last and so on... Growing up, I knew my Bach, my Beethoven, Mozart, and fell madly in love with Vivaldi, but didn't care much for opera... until, purely for the sake of erudition, I picked up Norma (circa '60) and turned me around!
