Strange that this skit was absolutely hilarious , yet I just saw Carol on a Canadian talk show called The Hour and she answered a question about whether there was a skit that backfired and she said that the Mary Worthless skit did not connect with the audience and everyone just sat there like "a giant oil painting" and that the comment she made at the end saying " be surprised because I'm not doing this again". However I heard nothing but laughter from the audience and Korman breaking up again
They record their sketches in front of a live audience but it's quite possible they had them "sweetened" - added laughter from previous sketches for the broadcast.
Or, considering how raucous the audience gets in the "best" of the sketches, maybe this was comparatively tame. I'm hoping for the latter. @_@
I saw another interview and Burnett said that she didn't like the sketch and decided not to do it again. Evidently it was supposed to be an ongoing thing. From that interview she gave it appeared to be just her personal dislike.
