@CRILLER3 You should read Wikipedia for the full story. And on YouTube, you could see the clip from 2004 where Leno announced that he'd leave the show.

@CRILLER3 Wikipedia is great source, but I'll summarize it.
Leno hosted The Tonight Show since 1992. In 2004, he said on the air that he would leave The Tonight Show and hand it to Conan in 2009. That happened, but Conan was having problems with scheduling changes that NBC wanted to make. These changes were partially due to a new show that Leno had. Conan had to leave NBC, and NBC gave The Tonight Show back to Leno.
