Guiyu, Guangdong Province, China: Here, 82% of children suffer from lead poisoning. Due to loopholes in Hong Kong's legislation, hundreds of tons of e-waste enters the Chinese mainland via Hong Kong each year.
You don't need to travel to Ghana to see the abuse of Hazardous Wastes. The irish environmental authorities have been turing a blind eye to unwashed chemical containers and contaminated silage plastics being exported. This waste ends up in China and Vietnam where it ends up being washed in rivers, often by children.
What good is an IMPORT ban? E-waste is being smuggled in! Greenpeace should demand the US/UK ban their EXPORT instead! On the other hand, China needs a rural education program to teach villagers job skills to make their home villages sustainable. Bamboo can be eaten, weaved into clothing, made into furniture, and used as construction material for building houses. Teach villagers bamboo growing and harvesting skills, then the skills of bamboo fabrication and construction.
China doesn't want girl children and often aborts them. Maybe stockpile this e-waste and all the girls in an area with a leachate liner? It's important to find uses for things we don't want because the earth's resources are finite. When the girls die of lead poisoning they can be ground down and the phosphorus in their bones can be used as fertilizer for a wheat crop to feed the next crew of e-waste picking orphans.
