Let's think what might happen if all those people DID survive...and prosper. Can you imagine the drain on our already-low resources? What would happen if we completely cured all the diseases like malaria, AIDS, influenza etc?
Can you imagine that?! We would kill each other over land and resources like food and water - to an even higher degree than we already do.
As awful as that stuff is - it keeps a balance at some level.
