beautiful engine, sad thing to happen. lots of people would have been really angry that it had blocked the tracks and delayed all the trains. good shooting, catching it falling straight off the tracks was really good. great video

This section of rail is where the broad gauge track leading to the loco depot cuts across the standard gauge mainline, and it had all just been replaced, however they didn't allow for the large flanges on the R class driving wheels so it wouldn't pass through the points, or widen them, it had to go over.... The engine was OK. Was towed home the next day I think... Can anyone shed any more light on that? Thanx.

It took about 6 hours fiddling and three diesels to pull it back on the track... and of course a lot of wood chocks! It was on the crossover points that cross the standard gauge line and lead down to the turntable. They had recently been rebuilt and there was not enough clearance for the larger flanges of an R class wheel. It held up all the standard gauge interstate trains... many very unhappy people!!

The rails had just been relaid, and at the point where the broad gauge crosses the standard gauge track there had not been enough gap left for the larger flanges of the 6' drivers... that was the theory of the day I believe... Caused much trouble, delaying all trains, including Sydney & local pass trains.. :(
