Northrop Grumman has developed the only 360 degree, spherical situational awareness system in the electro-optical distributed aperture system (DAS). The DAS surrounds the aircraft with a protective sphere of situational awareness. It warns the pilot of incoming aircraft and missile threats as well as providing day/night vision, fire control capability and precision tracking of wingmen/friendly aircraft for tactical maneuvering.
Designated the AN/AAQ-37, and comprising six electro-optical sensors, the full EO DAS will enhance the F-35's survivability and operational effectiveness by warning the pilot of incoming aircraft and missile threats, providing day/night vision and supporting the navigation function of the F-35's forward-looking infrared sensor.
The DAS provides:
•Missile detection and tracking
•Launch point detection
•Situational awareness IRST & cueing
•Weapons support
•Day/night navigation
In addition to developing the EO DAS, Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems is supplying the F-35's AN/APG-81 advanced electronically scanned array (AESA) fire-control radar. The AESA radar is designed to enable the pilot to effectively engage air and ground targets at long range, while also providing outstanding situational awareness
0:42 DAS ist gut.

@mwr691 USA is loosing the battle for last 5 years .. Your young people live the country for better life ... you have people in the roads that they don't have a place to live with no food . And you are talking about a foreign country that her economy is getting better and better after the biggest crisis it had in the 90's .

yeah this DAS system is so good to be truth ... You Americans think that opposition pilots are stupid ( 3:46 ) ?? And this plane has a lot of problems now so stop thinking about DAS and fix some problems that are more serious like A/C , VTOL and you should consider making an air frame to be durable for at least 20 years (reports say that is unlikely to make it to the required lifespan ).And a SPAAG would defeat you if it would fire to you because you can fight bullets with countermeasures..

apparently this thing has serious lag issues, it's not keeping up at the 40 ms promised.

uh... they arent leaking anything... if anything it has been a race to actually build a plane around these electronic technologies that we've had for years

no matter how much you guys hype up Russia and hate on the USA, you cant ignore the fact that the USA has and always will have a military exponentially superior to any other military in the world AND the fact that Russia is on a slow decline to third-world status (the average male Russian lifespan is 55 years old, there is propaganda ALL OVER THE COUNTRY encouraging women to have children, families with 2+ kids are given extra money). They are losing citizens twice as fast as they are born.

news just in, the most recent pics of the chengdu J-20 shows infra red sensors dotted around its fuselage, confirming that the chinese have their own distributed aperture system for their 5th gen fighter.
either the chinese have seriously gotten their shit together OR someone at northrop has been leaking a few industrial secrets...
