I've been messing around with VOIP stuff recently and have just configured Asterisk as a home PBX.

This video is just a quick demo of the Cisco 7960G connected to Asterisk via SIP placing a call to an Apple iPhone 3G running the Siphon SIP client also connected to the Asterisk server.

  • That's a magic Jack voice mail

  • No, it's the Asterisk voicemail system.

It's possible that the Magic Jack service uses Asterisk as it's PBX and voice mail system. I'm not aware of it though as I've no experience with Magic Jack :)

  • When you say "regular phones on your network", they'll be regular SIP compliant IP phones on your network, yes.

You won't be able to use them to make outgoing calls to normal PSTN telephone numbers without a SIP provider or an ATA.

  • Yes, the SPA9000 lets the VOIP network dial out over the PSTN.

  • Siftah, if I use the linksys spa9000 can I still make calls outside? thanks again

  • Thank you for your quick response Siftah,

So, once I install asterisk, I need to convert the 7940's to sip then I can use them as regular phones in my network. I have a wrt300n and a cisco 1900 switch. So I should be ok, I am right? thanks

  • If you just want to make calls between the two 7940's you won't need anything more than the Asterisk installation and some cables and an Ethernet switch.

The ISDN cards or SPA9000 is only required if you want to dial out over the normal PSTN.

    :)

  • I can't remember! I think it was one of the SIP clients that's available on Cydia (I jailbreak my phones).

There are a few SIP clients in the Apple Store now - it's worth investigating them as they're probably better than what I used.

  • sorry I did a type error I meant besides installing the os, if just want to do a voip lab with two cisco 7940's, do I need any other hardware apart from an internet card on the host machine?
