When the United States flag (Old Glory) becomes worn, torn, faded or badly soiled, it is time to replace it with a new flag, and the old flag should be "retired" with all the dignity and respect befitting our nation's flag. The traditional method of retirement is to incinerate the flag. Though I disagree with burning a flag for a political statement and truly feel it is a dishonorable act, I also feel that freedom of speech must be protected. However, today we are not burning a flag we are retiring a symbol of America's honor, courage, and strength. Visit my website at www.photosbyjohnhowell.com

  • Im very glad you guys give the respect toward this country by burning worn flags. but as a service member in the US Army im gonna give you guys a tip. when you properly dispose of a flag you are to cut the stars away from the stripes. at that point the flag is no longer a flag but 2 pieces of fabric. at which point you can burn the stripes and stars seperatly or together. i just wanted to tell you how we in the honor guard retire a flag properly. keep doing what your doing! God bless the USA!

  • @ehsbandgeek2009 Thanks for the info I didn't know that, and thanks for your service to this great Country. God bless America

That's a common misconception, but the US code says nothing about this. The1980 publication by the BSA "Our Flag" did say to cut up the flag (because of problems with a big enough fire to properly do the whole flag), but later this part was removed, presumably due to differing customs and the lack of support by the Flag Code. The only conclusion that can be drawn then is; you may cut or not cut the flag as long as the flag is retired in a "dignified" manner, which this was.

  • a very honorable video thank you for this, showing my son what it means to burn or retire the flag as oppsed to burn it, tomake some silly statement...i myself believe if you burn old glory for political reasons, then you are no more american than barack obama... well maybe not him, but anyway you get what im saying...

  • @driver4140 that may be what that code states all i was saying is that is how it has been done in the army since world war 1 and is still practiced today

  • @ehsbandgeek2009 The Federal Flag Code - Public Law 94-344 Only states that the flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning. There are no other provisions for retirement. What the boys are doing here is just fine.

  • Very cool. Our troop does a ceremony at Veterans Day and always looking to see what other troops are doing. YIS. CP SM TP498
