Each substance has its own "resonance frequency" which is the pitch of sound at which the substance will begin to vibrate very strongly. You might have noticed this with some sounds making your ear drums feel like they are fluttering. It's just the same as in this experiment. Except here, we get to break a wine glass.
So no, this is not a myth after all. A singer singing loud enough at THIS note will shatter a wine glass.
and it might interest you to know that the note that glass shattered at was NOT even in head voice for a decent soprano. mid-range for a mezzo.
so all the cartoons about it being a bulgarian tea-chest soprano singing at the very top of her range are rubbish.
