@FerretFailsFTW Probably because they were bred from polecats... and polecats can be extremely vicious if they feel threatened... which can be in any proximity to a human! Polecats will also hunt chickens, which would have upset farmers I suppose.
I'm guessing you didn't actually want an answer, but I'm a literalist at heart :D

I don't know WHO started this big rumor that ferrets are awful animals. They are much like perpetual kittens that steal things. They're so far from vicious it makes me laugh every time I hear someone say they are. I have 4 ferrets. One is deaf, one's a senior, and one is a little girl who poof out and gets over-excited about everything. My 4th was not socialized in the first 2 years of her life, so sometimes she does nip if frightened. All in all, these are amazing amazing animals!!!
