Documentary films are generally touted for their informational, emotional and, occasionally, experiential value. Rarely are they appreciated for their artistic qualities. This class focuses on nonfiction films that aspire to be works of art, stretching the conventional bounds of documentary in the process. Each session features a one-hour film followed by a discussion of its aims, themes and techniques. Showcasing a mix of U.S. and foreign films that range from personal essays to poetic docs, this course promises to be a real eye-opener.
