@alex71864 Well said!! I saw this movie when it was released in London in the Autumn of 1971. Clearly one of the most underrated movies ever made. I've always loved everything about it. Those unique superimpositions were very new back then. This western was known as Fonda's "Experimental" movie. An experiment that also worked for me. The ever reliable Warren Oates makes a great contribution too. Someday, this beautifully crafted movie is going to achieve the recognition it deserves.
This is one of the finest westerns I have seen. It has a certain Jeremiah Johnson's flavor to it. You did not need any special effects to make the plot work. Great music, great cast and great script. It shows the struggle of a man trying to find himself in this world and his self sacrifice trying to make a wrong right again. The takes that look like a still pictures in the climatic moments really worked. Saw it in 1980 and today but this time had more meaning. I cried.
One of my favorite films of any genre...This opening scene is visually and aurally stunning...
