After starring as Edgar Rice Burroughs' "Lord of the Jungle", Tarzan, in twelvie films between 1932 and 1948, former Olympic swimming champ, Johnny Weissmuller, traded his loincloth for a safari hat and became "Jungle Jim" in a series of B-programmers for independent producer Sam Katzman. The films, based very loosely on the comic character created by Alex Raymond, would last through 16 entries between 1948 and 1955, plus 26 televsion episodes. Often fanciful (--dinosaurs, courtesy footage from ONE MILLION, BC--) occassionally down right silly (--JUNGLE MOON MEN??--), the scripwriters imaginations ran rampant, limited only by the films' somewhat spartan budgetary constraints. Weissmuller had limited thespic abilities (--just take a look at SWAMP FIRE (1946--), but few were as graceful in the water (--and each JUNGLE JIM film had at least one scene where Weissmuller--) and could dish out the action convicingly. Using such exotic locals as Ray Corrigan's Corriginville movie ranch, the films required the viewer add an extra degree or two of suspended disbelief to transform those dusty trails into the wilds of Arfrica. Perhaps, that is why the films are remembered so fondly today....

  • later on in the long jungle jim series- he had a white dog named skipper-then in the half hour series 1955-56--he had a son called skipper--these were shot at the backlots and ranches in hollywood--pure entertainment growing up-

  • Uma volta aos meus 12, 13 anos. Que saudade !!!!!

  • I was under the impression that the dinosaur (the guy in the stupid suit) was cut from the final film.

You know, racism and terrible budgets aside, I kinda wish we had this kind of serial rather than reality TV or any one of the "drama" soap operas.

  • Tamba the chimp was SO underrated!

  • not was a teletubbie 0:57

  • Why does Jim always seem so Confused? Is he waiting for directions from Cheetah? :-)

  • Is that Barney at 0:57?
