Large Hadron Collider is today's buzz phrase, so we've decided to give you a few extra special facts about the supposed "Big Bang Machine"...

@ The Large Hadron Collider is the biggest machine ever created.

@ The 27km long circular tunnel at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) is buried between Lake Geneva and the Jura mountain range

@ When the circular tunnel was excavated, the two ends met up with just one centimetre of error.

@ The tunnel has its own fire brigade.

@ Protons will travel through the LHC accelerator ring at 99.999 per cent of the speed of light.

@ Six hundred million collisions will take place every second as the protons smash into each other.

@ Collisions will generate temperatures more than 100,000 times hotter than the sun.

@ Each proton moves at a speed equivalent of a family car travelling at 1,056 miles per hour.

@ Cable used to power the accelerator would stretch round the equator 6.8 times.

@ Data recorded in each of LHC's big experiments would fill 100,000 DVDs.

@ CERN estimates that just one per cent of data recorded will be useful.

  • totally agree with IONZagan, news readers should have a little more education and know that the speed of light is such as to go around the earth several times in a second (186,000 miles per second), the Hadran circuit of 27 Km should be covered in a split second (1/1000th of a sec?)

  • LOL the first beam made it in under an hour, what a load of crap by the time the beams even enter the larger rings they are going about 99.8% the speed of light and go around that ring in about 5 ms.

  • Ok i get that..But the world was threatned by an Very Evil Regime that was on the verge of taking over the wrld..What are we threathend by that shows that we need to take this risk today??????

  • There are risks to some degree with all most every advancement in any science whether that be medicine, physics or any other decipline. Because somebody is willing to take a risk, the work ongoing in Switzerland could prove to be the 1st great experiment of the 21st cent.

  • When Oppenhiemer,Fermi and rest of a past generation developed the weapon that saved maybe another 3/4 of a million lives (Allies and Nipponese) during WW ll, they first had to test the bomb. When they did there was a slight theorical possibility that, just maybe, the explosion would light up the atmosphere into one big fire ball and bring on the end of the world! They were willing to take that risk!

  • While ill agree that i dont think it will create a black hole..but some scientist or ignorant enough to do stupid things no matter how smart they are..history shows this

  • well depends how small it is.....

  • Negative, zabeh. Scientists have proven, that it is impossible for such a small black hole to suck up the planet. It will die out, before it can even suck up a person. Anyways, scientists wouldn't be so stupid. To experiment something so dangerous...

  • u kidding me .......the size of black hole dont matter....even the smallest black hole would suck the shyt out of the earth

  • this is bs
