To you maybe. Not everyone is the same. Some people find the abacus easier, which is why it's still used. Also because people in third world countries may not be able to afford a digital calculator so the abacus is an obvious choice. It just depends on what you're used to.

It is probably one of the best ways to teach children math. Math should be made interactive and fun for kids. The amount of time pushing multiplication tables - all that teaches is a list. Children love being involved in finding the answer. It teaches them to learn for themselves.

for thoes of you that don't "get it" (how is counting beeds easier than a calc'), the answere is quite simple (and yet, hard to understand).

Today, many of you naturally make the conections betwen an amount, and the number representing that amount (5, is just the number 5, it's not 5 things).

For kids, making this connection is hard (not to mention, the concept of zero, "how can you have something to represent nothing").

the abacus helps in making that leap.
