This is a video of my Urban Altoids Survival Tin that I carry every day. I show a comparison of 2 survival tins, one that is better suited for a Rural or Wilderness environment and the one that I carry that is beneficial for city living. I live in the Seattle area, where I am always within a 1 mile radius of a Starbucks, so having fishing wire or a fire steel on me every day is not necessary.

Yes, this Urban Altoids Survival Tin would not do me much good if I can lost in the Amazon Jungle. I'd probably be a goner (although I do have enough wilderness survival equipment in my EDC backpack). However, for my day to day life in the city, this EDC Altoids Tin gets used often enough to be carried daily.

If I ever decide to go on a family vacation into a rural/wilderness setting, I will leave the Urban Survival Tin at home and will carry a Rural Survival Tin that will better meet the needs in that sort of environment.

I'd love to hear your comments. I am constantly trying to improve my systems. Thanks!

  • I think I'll make one of these. One thing I could suggest is a micro sd card reader. You can find one on newegg.com that is almost just as small as a micro sd card and will read from a usb port, i popped a 16gb card in one and it reads on every computer i've encountered.

  • @earlwinddancer Thanks for the suggestion! I have a spare one I could easily add.

  • i feel ths is more of a daily use tin not a survival tin dont get me wrong this great in day to day (non-appoctlipitc) activity but i would no wannt to try to survive with this one

  • @donmon425 Yes, you are right. However, I feel that there is not a lot of scenarios in an urban environment that warrants carrying a tin with the more typical survival gear. I try to have a well rounded EDC that gives me a lot of options for my day to day life with supplies that I am more than likely to use. Thanks for the comment!

  • @donmon425 Hence the term EDC. This is an Every Day Carry pack. This is one of the best EDCs I've seen and will be updating mine with a lot of these ideas. Thanks UrbanPrepper, great job!

  • @sjntube Thanks! I'm glad this video was useful for you. All of the items come in extremely handy for me. :)

  • It's great to see a video that is more grounded in reality for the vast majority of us. The anti diarrhea pills are key, ditto for the Micra. In an urban or suburban area, scissors are simply more useful than a knife. I'm going to make one of these and toss it in my backpack. Altoids tins are too big for my pocket.

  • Have you considered wrist or neck lanyards on the flashlight and whistle? I would think those are items you don't want to risk dropping and losing.

  • @ROBSKEET24 He won't need any more with that tin if it all kicks off, because he'll be dead!

  • Very well thought out for an urban environment. i like this very much. the thought you put into your vids is very evident. keep up the great work. i will keep my rural tin in my GHB, and this is a great idea for daily carry. All the good ideas have already been mentioned.

  • I'm very new to all this, but I've enjoyed--and learned from your videos. I also live in an urban area with little use for fishing line, etc., so I wanted to build my own urban kit. I' trying out one of those aluminum wallets, however. It is nearly the size of the Altoids tin but built to be in a back pocket. I found the small items easily fit into the wallet's slots designed for credit cards, etc. It has a latch and is advertised as water and crush proof. We'll see how it works out!

  • what did you use to hold the money?
