In the original graphic novel, "The Killing Joke", he didn't know that Barbara Gordon was Batgirl. He just shot her and took pictures of her stripped naked and bleeding to drive Commissioner Gordon mad after he kidnapped him.

This is the only good thing they did in this series. The production and acting were terrible. Camera angles too, it just didn't feel right. For a batman series or any kind of TV show.
