This demonstration video shows how autofocus quits working as I slowly pan along the horizon. I move the camera up and down slowly to either see if it will come back into focus, or to demonstrate how the image stabilization shakes whenever I stop panning. Whenever you see the picture shaking it is probably the autofocus, unless you hear me say in the video that I am moving it. This is a demo video and not an example of the type of video that I shoot.

This is my second Canon Photoshot SX40 IS camera. The first one came apparently damaged in the mail from Sam's Club online (see previous video that I posted a few days ago.) After many phone calls and emails with Canon's customer service, I decided to do an even exchange with my local Sam's Club store, hoping that a camera from in the store would not have gotten smashed up with the poor packaging. I have not explanation at this point for the horrid quality of this camera, as this second camera is just as bad as the first!

I am posting this as an example video for this second camera, and am waiting for Canon to contact me on Monday, as I have sent them a detailed email outlining these problems. I have NEVER had such trouble with any Canon camera I have owned, as I have owned dozens of them over the years.

I use my cameras several times a day, to the point that I usually wear them out in about a year's time. I recently literally wore out my last Canon camera, which is evident in this last year's lesser-quality videos on my channel.

  • I didn't give up on the camera, but just on using it for video. I stand by my claim that the camera does NOT operate properly, and it is not that I do not know how to use it. Making mean comments towards me for posting this video and my opinions is not helpful, and they may be removed, at my discretion.

  • Well, I've decided to leave the Canon family of cameras for good. I'm returning this second Powershot SX40 HS for a refund, and am going to buy a different brand. I'm sick of Canon's policies and procedures, and lack of concern over their customers. After being loyal to Canon for 35 years, I would think they'd care more, but I'm giving up.

  • I hope you'll be getting a positive response from Canon tomorrow. I know I would/will be upset too if I have similar issues with mine (it is scheduled to arrive Tuesday). From the research I've done, what you're experiencing seems to be a fluke of sorts. I bought one after deciding it would be a smarter option then a DSLR with adapter to fit all my old Canon FD lenses. I hope this works out for you!!

  • @bob5944 Thanks, bob5944! I will let you know exactly what Canon says or does to help me. I'm not sure what they will say, but when I contacted them about the FIRST camera, they told me to mail it to their repair facility in Norfolk, VA. I am not about to box this up and pay my own postage to mail it off and be without a camera for several weeks. There must be a faster solution to getting a working SX40.

  • 35 years? you can use a camera that has full MANUAL! Know how to get the best of the camera. AUTO will just do what the camera wants to do, make it do what you want!

The image stabilization seems to be off, you have to turn it on. Even if it were on, IS cant stabilize every possible shake you give the camera.

HOLIDAY cameras will always suck, no camera company will put the best features in a point and shoot.

LITTLE PEOPLE on my channel is shot with the SX40HS.

DSLRs are the best for manual :)

  • Helloooooo, it's you, not the camera.

  • You need to learn how to use it, you brainless tit!

  • this is a good camera. you just dont know how to use it. the camera don't know where to focus because you are pointing the camera in the sky while panning. canon is the best camera brand in the market today. this camera is great. if you think other cameras are better, you are wrong. Sony and Panasonic cameras are worse because they cant handle low-light situations but Canon can. trust me. I have a sony and panasonic proffesional compact camera but they are not good in lowlight situations
