  • Haah, the little 40 plus! Proud owner of one those great little outboard motors.

  • Whoops, messed up on the above calculation, that is for a 16 foot boat. Assume the boat is 9 feet long for easy reckoning, max displacement speed is 3 * 1.5 = 4.5 Knots.

  • These engines were designed to propel heavy, displacement hulls, slowly. A displacement hull has a top speed determined by the boats length. Speed in knots is the square root of the waterline length ( in feet ) multiplied by 1.5. Your boat looks about 8 feet long, so max speed is 4*1.5=6 Knots. Compare the engines on a much longer boat and you would see the difference.
