He paints a nail red every time he kills someone for asking a personal question.

It's an homage to his mother. The story goes, she said if he was going to be a magician, he'd have to make sure his hands looked nice since people would be looking at them all day, so he painted his nails with her red nail polish and said 'Is this what you had in mind?' He ended up painting just the one nail, because it's such an excellent distraction to the audience.
