Freek-a-rella, a Broward County Gold Coast "Grrl," has Lupus, but that very important fact does not stop her! She invited the Southeast Chapter of the Lupus Foundation of America to hold a fundraiser at the Ft. Lauderdale showdown, May 1st 2010, against the Jacksonville Roller Girls.
We got front row seats angled right of the section dubbed suicide seats (where one brings their own cushions or small beach-like chairs and sits on the floor in front of the actual seating area).
It was quite a time watching intimidating women in crazy, skimpy and fun outfits pushing, blocking and causing their opponents to land face flat on the rink floor...essentially taking each other out all while skating at the speed of light.
There were a few injuries, but never fear, the paramedics are on hand at all roller derby events.
A full bar and some roller derby shopping was available for spectators ranging from families, to teens, to grown couples.
