A very simple video on how to apply your downloaded theme as the default cursor theme. This will surely work on any Ubuntu version.

One way of doing it is by changing your pointer in the Appearance settings. But this method will change the cursor only on selected applications. The method shown in the video will change the cursor at all times.

You can download themes at http://gnome-look.org .

The following steps are to be followed after downloading the theme of your choice:
* Extract the zipped file and the extracted tar.gz file onto your desktop.
* Copy the extracted folder.
* Open up your terminal and type - "sudo nautilus".
* Navigate to /usr/share/icons and paste the folder there.
* Open up your terminal again and type "sudo gedit /usr/share/icons/default/index.theme".
* Edit the "Inherits=x" to "Inherits=[extracted_folder_name]".
* Log out and Log in is required for the changes to take effect.

  • I can't get it to change in all my apps though. It gives me a different one than the one I am wanted. It worked for the main desktop but using firefox just now it gives me a totally different one.

    I am using Ubuntu 11.04 Ultimate Edtion. I have the themes installed, but need some help, please?

  • "Nautilus-Share-Message: Called "net usershare info" but it failed: 'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare: cannot open usershare directory /var/lib/samba/usershares. Error No such file or directory

    Please ask your system administrator to enable user sharing." WTF???

  • what is ur cursor?

  • Thank you :)

  • It didn't work :(

  • @xsdvn hmm...it might be working, but the main point of this video was to simplify the process as far as possible, without using confusing commands so that it can be done by people without terminal experience! :)

    Thanks for your reply anyway! :)

  • Hi! There is an other method which I'm using.

    You also able to set cursors theme by editing ~/.gtkrc-2.0 or ~/.Xdefault

    Example: in ~/.Xdefault file which there is one line like this:

    Xcursor.theme:"ComixCursors-Black-Small"

    and in ~/.gtkrc-2.0 file:

    gtk-cursor-theme-name="ComixCursors-Black-Small"

    gtk-cursor-theme-size=16

    It seems ok, at least with me! :D
