Something like that must have been what was wrong. I swapped out the cylinder head with one off of ebay and it looks like the leaks have all cleared up (knocking on wood the entire I'm saying that).

Back in 1990, I had a similar problem with my 81 650C. It turned out to be the o-rings for the valve guides. I replaced them, problem solved. It's never happened again. Of course I didn't use OEM parts. But I remember oil leaking from the exhaust ports, and dripping down the fins. It's a thought I guesws...Hope it is some help.
