La trama de la película es coetánea a su fecha de estreno, narrando acontecimientos ficticios en el año 1984 en que se desarrolla la acción presente de la película, si bien se recurre de forma frecuente al flashback para narrar hechos del siglo XVI principalmente, que están relacionados con el protagonista.
