Candle in the Wind -- "Goodbye Norma Jean"/ Marilyn Monroe - by Elton John & Bernie Taupin - How the song was created - an interesting documentary segment.
Well, I'm loathe to disagree w the actual writer of this song-the English are always so dry~But if it hadn't been about 'Norma Jean' (which was a stroke of genius to say instead of 'Goodbye Marilyn')well it just wouldn't have had the same deep poignancy & resonance, especially w the American audience. That whole period is still an open wound on the American psyche Marilyn's own mysterious death...JFK. MLK & RFK's assassination. Marilyn's death broke the dike on a whole cascade of tragedies.
When I talk about Elton to the non-believers, I always say it's not just Elton, but it's also Bernie's wonderful writing, and the band: Davey, Nigel and Dee and Ray. The five greatest musicians ever. As well as Paul Buckmaster and James Newton-Howard, and Caleb Quaye. And yes Gus and Chris,That make Elton's albums the full bodied sound and so enjoyable to hear a hundred times for 30 something years.

It's too bad they destroyed this song by changing it to Goodbye England's Rose. I can't listen to that version.
