@Onihikage Oh please, don't try to explain about Ron Paul but he too was chosen. If Bachman, Perry, Santorum, Romney, Gignwich and Cain were selected, so was Paul. You just wish for a Santa to come down but the reality is all politicians are dirty, including the Pauls.

@Onihikage I think we're on our way to a truly multi-party system (both major parties are splintering as we speak), but that kind of change will be hard fought by corporate interests that benefit so much from the current system.
I do think political parties are useful, though. They provide a platform for individuals who wouldn't have it otherwise. We just need more of them so that voters have more choices. Eliminating private contributions from the system should help that to happen.

@lgvereor Yeah, and in a republic, the sheep would had a gun (to protect himself.) : )

@DtotheG1969 Another thing we need to do is make all primary votes take place at the same time, just like in the national election. Of course, ending the party system would be nice, especially in an age where computers and the internet allow us to instantly compare candidate stances and voting histories. We need to, as this video says, "Pick a president, not a party."

@2012StarShooting No, Romney is the chosen one, and Santorum is the chosen alternative. The media takes every chance they get to bash and downplay Ron Paul. That doesn't sound like someone who has the blessing of the elites.

@shiftgc You're absolutely right, our election system is broken. What we really need is to eliminate ALL private money form the process...period. The Citizens United vs Board of Elections ruling made it all worse. National elections must be publicly funded by tax payers so that we all have an equal stake in the outcome. The election cycle must also be limited to 90 days to keep the cost down. Currently, super pacs and wealthy donors decide who runs, who wins, and the policy agenda.
-
Sorry but this will not work. Obama will be re-elected in 2012. Oh as for the Ron Paul supporters, he was chosen by the elites. Don't think he just got up there on his own.
-
@DtotheG1969 You're right that voters should stop being apathetic and lazy and do research before voting. But the system itself is deeply flawed. Once the parties choose their nomination, why aren't all the other parties you mentioned recognized at the podium of a presidential debate? Hasn't happened since Ross Perot... The current system makes people think they really only have 2 choices. Rather than choosing a president on a ballot, you should rank all the candidates from first choice to last.

Political parties are cancer I agree. We need to abolish representatives altogether and have direct democracy. Look to the participatory budgeting system they had in Brazil or Venezuela or ancient greece where they choose all officials by lot except for presidents.
The United States might have been the country that revived democracy, but now they are lagging behind with this aging constitution.

@Muffinfordinner To continue, they have us convinced that we as a society have to pick one or the other, the lesser of two evils. That's the mindset we truly need to break. In his farewell address, George Washington warned against political parties, and I believe he envisioned 21st century American politics when he said it. If it were up to me, I'd have at least 5 parties in Congress so none have a majority. If you know what a majority or minority whip is, you know why parties are bad.
@Muffinfordinner Reality check, America is not a democracy. Democracies are impossible and illegitimate.
A democracy is three wolves and a sheep deciding what is for dinner.
