Interview with Norman Cook, Canadian development expert (and jazz lover). How have the roles of NGOs changed? Are they becoming near-governmental - "embedded" with power politics? How our development models and criteria often don't fit the reality in developing countries.
Interview by Jan Oberg, November 27, 2007
@themaclady The UN is not actually an NGO as Norman Cook was referring to. The UN should be considered as more of an Intergovernmental Organisation (IGO), since its members comprise of states (and the term state in this context means country, i know a lot of Americans like you need to have many things spelt out to you). What is wrong with the UN 'infliltrating' your country anyway? Do you even know what they do? Probably not. You're too busy eating fast food and reloading your gun.

@themaclady Some people care about the rest of the world. Sorry. I hope that every day you are properly thankful for where you were born, and the fact that you enjoy 5-10x the wealth of the rest of the world on average (based on GNI, at least). I get isolationism, and that we come first, but I fail to understand how folks like you can be so utterly selfish. I'd say such a self-absorbed world view is pretty shameful, yourself.

@Trilemmaman We do not want our 'resources' appropriated by you. This my friends means redistribution of the wealth. SHAMEFUL.

NGOs like the UN do not belong in our country or our school systems... they have infiltrated every part of America promoting this nonsense.

NGO's are corrupt aren't they?

While the military can play a small and important role in development efforts it is actaully the context of national security that can best mobilize the resources needed to meet and exceed the MDGs. The threat of pandemics, terrorism can best be prevented through global provisions of basic health and education efforts. Without the context of national security, the resources needed will never be adequately appropriated.
