@BRONCOWEN. POW's of all nationalities were mistreated -- I'd hardly call that a "holocaust"... I can think of many other WW2 events with far greater casualties... the siege of leningrad, stalingrad, the fire bombings of dresden and tokyo, the atomic bombings over japan, and so on.
-
@ramrokta I read also that a lot died in POW camp.

@Koladikal most were set free after a short time some served in the french foreign legion some in the new germn army but most returned to their families my grand father was a war prisoner in the USA he said that they treated him very well and he had high respect for the US. Only war criminals were later executed mainly by hanging them

It's like Shifty Powers said. " Under different circumstances, we might have been the best of friends." War sucks!

They were taught to be Nationalist, to take pride in their race, their culture, their people and to do be honorable and courageous no matter what. They were taught this from the day they were born until they got into the Hitler Youth until they died on the Battlefield.

Many were left in the USSR still as prisoners even after the War. The Communist were ruthless basterds. Hitler knew this thus is why he tried to eliminate them.
But many Germans still worked as prisoners until the Berlin Wall fell down.......what were left of the prisoners...the Communist didn't give a damn,

@Koladikal most were set free, many of the generals and other officers returned to service in the newly reformed German Army that was allied to NATO the Bundeswehr

In that generals eyes we are all humans no one is more powerful than another
just out of curiosity, what happened to those german soldiers after the war? were they imprisoned or set free?

@Koladikal I think some were shot, some imprisoned, some set free. Some of them had to work in other countries. For eg, a person I knew had to work for 15 years in france in agriculture. But, I think most were set free.

Wish my dad could have lived to see this series. He fought the Germans in North Africa, Normandy and the Bulge, and it was often a life/death struggle. But he admired their professionalism and courage, and would never allow anyone to mock the common German soldier in his presence. In fact-as fate would have it- he got to know a few former Heer soldiers after the war, and they were friends, because they shared a bond that the civilians of either country will never understand.

@BenAliGtor Respect for your father. Yes, we civilians will never understand the bond that exists between military personnel. It is stupid politicians that declare the war and innocent people have to lose lives. Such a sad world.
