  • @ronwarshawsky I disagree with the report:

    a) in 1939/40 SU's invasion bogged down, and by the time they got their act together, England and France were about to join the fight. Stalin had to back off.

    b) in 1944 the same happened, Red Army grounded to halt at Tali/Ihantala/Ilomantsi. All the ten major offences were repulsed by the Finns. Even more, Khrushchev said of it, "After the DEFEAT of our army, Stalin lost his nerve". That is, his resolve to occupy Finland was broken.

  • c) troops from the southern theatre COULD NOT be sent to north without jeopardizing gains there. It wasn't an option.

    d) Stalin had it in him to get to Berlin first. He had no choice in the matter; for, man must do and CANNOT but do except that which is topmost in his heart. First in Berlin was in Stalin's. And since there had been no quick victory in the north, the only option for him was to commence negotiations, and start pulling troops out from Finland in race to Berlin.

  • Love Finland, Love Russia:

Despite the great losses inflicted by the war, Finland fought for and preserved its independence; nevertheless, had the Soviets been vitally concerned about Finland, there is no doubt that Finnish independence would have been extinguished. Finland emerged from the war conscious of these realities and determined to establish a new and constructive relationship with the Soviet Union.
