Both instructors teach cane self defense. One from a chinese perspective, one from a japanese perspective. The form demonstrated is the Wu Dang Cane set.

  • not sure why this was rated so low, as this is an excellent clip.

  • I would use a cane or walking stick as weapon and I'm not a senior citizen.

  • A Campbell Cane could be an interesting senior defense device. I was asked last year about designing a cane that could be functional, artistic and defensive. The latest design fits this description. I was involved in martial arts in the 60's..now I am way over 60. I would not want to be on the other end.

  • I am not sure why it is called Wu Dang. But, if the "instructor" received his training from there than it would be wise to check the credentials of the Chinese Teacher :-)

  • I agree with both these guys. One method is good for, health , balance , general fitness and self-confidence; the other method for speed, surprise and real-life street defense. It takes years and years of training at martial arts to become capable of reacting quickly enough and effectively enough in real life. Better to become aware, keep your eyes open and learn one or two fast, simple thrusting strikes to the chest, throat or head.

  • I agree with you. Martial arts are great, but many things they used in the past cant be used any more. Like killing techniques and weapons, they are all illegal to do or carry. So we cant use them any more. I think we most let go of our old martial arts and create new ones designed to work on the street of today and not on the streets four hundred years ago.

  • Thats good - It's realy important to practice realistic weapons such as the cane etc... as the law bans carrying almost anything sharp made of steel - I find DIY tools just as usefull & often use my garden spade as an ulternative 4 monk's crescent moon spade. I take it anywhere - the cops r happy & so am I. Have fun.

  • Sensible self-defense. Can be done as well with the Unbreakable Umbrella (see demo at v=bO8G5zsQohg or at UnbreakableUmbrella DOT com).
