If you read the new "Dalek Handbook" by Steve Tribe & James Goss, apparently the idea of 'Spider' Daleks was floated for the 96 Dr Who movie; see p92 for details. The idea was that the traditional Dalek casing was a form of armour that could adapted for different combat situations; the mutant inside was shaped like a spider. Interesting idea.

@chewie211171 Which indeed, is where this footage comes from... though was very early stages.

The Spider Daleks were I believe first "seen" in one of the New Adventure novels... though I'm not sure if that was before or after this footage/the telemovie.

I remember this design, but that's not from the Spielberg project. This was a design that was knocked up by someone else for their own entertainment.

I think the web page is long gone, as the guy apparently died.

@LaughingPsycho On the latest Telemovie release, it shows the Amblin footage... and indeed, it's nothing like this one. This is a lot more primitive (no offense to its creator - I personally like this design better). So yes, I'd concur, not Amblin.

But they would find the design change to be an 'Abomination'. It would make more sense if these were the Daleks from Pete's World, after all, they have their own Cybermen.

@Kragdude yes but a Dalek isn't like the Cybermen or the Doctor. you cannot mess with the design bcos thats what is iconic about it. we NEVER even had a consistent look for the Dalek mutants until the new series, so its not like they are imbedded int he memory. a Dalek needs to retain its overall shape and appearence. i mean have 1 or 2 different models fine, but make sure they are the exceptions not the rule

fuck me, ppl complained when they saw the paradigm daleks in series 5. i think blood would've flowed had these things walked out instead. to be fair, if you tweaked the design aspect and called it something OTEHR than a Dalek, it'd actually be kinda cool. but its...its just not a dalek. i know its on the inside that counts...never thought i'd say that with a dalek...but really thedalek shape is whats iconic

@thecosmichobo I'm pretty sure this was an earlier version, as I used to have another clip where the leg animation was a lot better and more like a spider running.
